Food Guide In Mathura

Shopping in Mathura

The city bazaars are full of shops with what we call ‘Krishna-ware’! Mathura is also famous for sculptures, hand-embroidered cloth, silver ornaments, textiles and handicrafts, so pick up some sarees or jewellery when visiting. Additionally, the city has tons of Krishna-related material like pictures, rings, necklaces and pendants.

The Radha Dhiraj Bazaar, adjacent to the Dwarkadheesh Temple, is the place to buy some silver jewellery.
Holi Gate Darwaza is the main shopping area selling everything from eatables and clothes to stationery and handicrafts (Hand made embroideries are also famous in Mathura as are the numerous sculptures and images, paintings, rings and malas dedicated to Lord Krishna) and other deities.
Krishna Janmabhoomi is popular for its bangles. The holy pendants and rosaries in all shapes and sizes and around temples there are lots of stalls selling flowers, incense sticks and ‘prasad’ along with prayer books to be offered to the deities of the temples.
Shankar Halwai and BMB are famous for the Mathura pedha and anyone can point them out to you.

Braj Yatra Fair in Mathura

Braj yatra commences one day after janmashtami and lasts for 50 days after the commencement. During this yatra the devotees of lord Krishna follows 30 rules such as to walk barefoot, sleep on the floor, abstain from sex, intoxicants, greed and anger, have ritual baths and listen to Krishna’s exploits, sing kirtans (hymns) in his praise, and visit and worship holy sites. According to the Matasya Purana, there are 25,000 tirthas (shrines) within Brajamandala. The spiritual merit accruing out of this pilgrimage is immense. It is believed that those who undertake the parikrama are delivered from all sins, and gain salvation.

Janmashtami Festival in Mathura

Janmashtami is the biggest festival of Mathura and it is held on a grand scale. Hindus celebrates Lord Krishna’s birthday as Janmashtami on the eighth day of the darker half of the month in July/August. Krishna Balarama Mandir Beautiful Temples Near Mathura

This temple is built by the International Society for Shri Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), it is one of the most beautiful temples in Vrindavan. This beautiful marble temple was constructed twenty years ago. The principal deities of this temple are Krishna, his brother Balram and Radha (Krishna’s consort). In front of the temple is the Samadhi Mandir of Srila Prabhupada. This is where his body was laid to rest after he passed away in 1977. His house has been turned into a museum. A famous place of Hindu pilgrimage, Govardhan is located on a narrow sandstone hill known as Giriraj which is about 8 km in length. Pilgrims go barefoot around this hill for prayers. It is said that young krishna held giriraj up on the fingertip on one leg for seven days and seven nights to shield the people of Braj from the deluge of rain sent down by Lord Indra.
