The word Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit word Deepawali, meaning “a row of light". This festival falls on the new moon night of Kartika (October-November) and is celebrated over the period of five days. The first day is considered very auspicious for the purchase of new clothes, utensils, housewares and other such items. Diwali is associated with several mythological stories.

According to one myth, Lord Krishna is believed to have destroyed Narakasura on the first day of Diwali. In some parts of India, effigies of demon Narakasura are burned on Diwali to celebrate the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon. In the North India, the second day of Diwali is dedicated to the worship of the sacred hill Govardhana, near the town of Mathura, a site of deep religious significance to the devotees of Lord Vishnu.

On Diwali he returned to his capital city of Ayodhya after completing fourteen years of exile. The entire city was lit with oil lamps in celebration of his return. This is the reason why Diwali is known as the Festival of Lights. Hindus world over replicate the scene by lighting their homes with decorated oil lamps. In India public places are lit up during this period. Celebrations also include bursting of firecrackers. Originally meant to enhance the lighting, these crackers today have become a source of sound and smoke pollution in many urban areas.

Diwali is celebrated by Hindus with extraordinary festivity. Houses are cleaned and painted. Utensils are cleaned, and cushions and upholstery of furniture are changed. People wear new clothes and take pledges to begin a new life. Shops and offices are decorated with colored electric lights. Businessmen close their old account books and begin new ones. At dusk, homes and shops are illuminated with coloured lights, followed by fireworks. People exchange gifts and visit friends and relatives.

Ayodhya is perhaps the most noted place in northern India where Parikramas are undertaken by Hindu pilgrims. These circumbulations of important religious places are of varying durations, shortest being the ‘Antargrahi Parikrama’ which has to be completed within a day.

Then there is the `Panchkoshi Parikrama’ circuit of 10 miles, which touches Chakratirtha, Nayaghat, Ramghat, Saryubagh, Holkar-ka-pura, Dashrathkund, Jogiana, Ranopali, Jalpa Nala and Mahtabagh. On the way the people pay homage to deities in the shrines which are situated on the route.

The `Chaturdashkoshi Parikrama’ constitutes a circular journey of 28 miles made once a year on the occasion of Akshainaumi, which is completed within 24 hours.

Sravan Jhula Mela In Ayodhaya

It commences on the third day of the second half of Shrevana (July-August) and lasts ill the end of the month. This mela celebrates the playful spirit of the deities. On the third day of the second half of Shravan, images of the deities (especially of Rama, Lakshman and Sita) are placed in swings in the temples. The mela lasts till the end of the month of Shravan. They are also taken to Mani Parvat, where the idols are made to swing from the branches of the trees. Later the deities are brought back to temples.

The Birth of Lord Rama is celebrated at midnight, Ayodhya is filled with the sound of conches and bells. Ram Lila, the enactment of the story of Lord Rama is believed to have been started by great Saint Tulsidas. The Ramcharitmanas, written by him till today forms the basis of Ram Lila performances. In some places, Rama Lila is associated with Vijayadashmi celebrations in late September and early October and also with Rama Navami, the birthday of Lord Rama.

The four main Ram Lila styles are the pantomimic style with a predominance of jhankis – tableaux pageants; the dialogue - based style with multi-local staging; the operative style which draws its musical elements from the folk operas of the region and the stage – Ram Lila of the professional troupes called `mandalis’.

Ayodhya is popular for mandali Ram Lila. The performance is dialogue – based and presented on a platform stage. High standard of performance is complemented by songs and kathak dances and eye-catching décor.
